WHAT ON EARTH do you have to do to get an honor like this?!

This is in the stall of the men's public restroom at Pacific Place shopping area in downtown Seattle. Not sure who David Rutherford is, but men all over the Pacific NW have flushed in his memory.
God bless him.

Look what this hotel offers for free if you stay!

Old people are funny.
I like that they are not offering free Wi-Fi in their cozy mountain retreat, instead they offer their guests free Hi-Wi.

The kids grow so fast, we can't keep shoes on them!

Rather than keep buying pair after pair of expensive shoes they just seem to
outgrow in a matter of weeks, we are now exploring different options that may
buy us some time.

While this may not actually be the best footwear options, but MAYBE,
since they are made of concrete, it will slow them down a bit!

Video highlights of Eli's first swim meet!

I just wish the whole meet had gone by this fast…

It was 3 hours in the hot 97 degree Florida sun!

We had fun, but WOW was it hot!

Eli did great at his first swim meet!

He swam in four races. One for each stroke. He placed First in Backstroke! Got Third in both Breaststroke and Butterfly. And Fourth in Freestyle (but that was his very first race and I think he was really nervous.
He did awesome! I will post video of all the races later tonight on my Facebook.

The single most surprising, most inspirational performance I have ever seen!

Susan Boyle - Singer - Britains Got Talent 2009
Video sent by moovieblog

You will not believe your eyes (and ears) when you hear 47 year old Susan Boyle (who lives alone with her cat and has never ever even been kissed) sings "I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables" for Britains Got Talent 2009.

GRAB A HANKY! You will be moved, I promise!

Most surprising, inspirational performance I have ever seen!

This is no joke. She has is 48, lives with her cat and has never even been kissed, but today she is auditioning for Britain Has Talent and is singing a song from the Les Miserables. You have to see it to believe it! (oh, and grab a hanky, you might just need it)

This is a new commercial for the Sprint "Now Network" and is like a lot of spots out there that are focused on where we are headed in the new Digital frontier...  This one is just focused on how we are using our cell phones.
It is Brilliant!

We just need to figure out how to adapt and market Christian music radio for the next generation like they are their phones!

Why do the Jewish kids get all the fun?!

Tina and I were shopping the other day at Publix grocery store just down the street from our house (north of Orlando FL) and at the end of one of the isles was a very interesting display of different toys for use in teaching Passover to Jewish children.  There were puppets, books and other assorted toys, like a giant, blow-up Matsa ball.  But the best ones by far were the two different bags of “Plague toys” designed to help kids learn about the many plagues that Egypt experienced (see Exodus) when the Pharaoh refused to let Moses and the other Hebrew people leave their bonds of slavery.  (Doesn’t this sound like fun stuff for kids already?!)

One bag has MASKS, each representing a different plague (like lice, boils, frogs, darkness, locusts, etc) for the kids to wear and presumably put on a play or something (though the Pharaoh and Moses masks are apparently sold separately!)  The other bag has toys to represent the plagues. There are plastic frogs, Sunglasses (for darkness), stick-on dots for boils, and even blood.  Yes, it has fake “blood of the first born” to play with too!  Wow!

I know that my kids LOVE their Narnia toys and their Star Wars toys.  I worry at times that they may be a bit violent for them since so much of the action is all based on sword/lightsaber play, but they have a blast doing it so we tolerate it and try to teach them the difference between the real and imaginary.  But this is not imaginary.  These Jewish kids are getting toys to act out the real life plagues that hit Egypt and actually effected (even killed) tons of people.  I am all for teaching the Bible and learning about a very important time in our religious history, but these toys are really kind of creepy to say the least!  Maybe we should wait to teach the specifics of Passover story till kids are a little older than toddlers running around with masks full of boils and fake first born blood….

New video montage of Naomi kickin' some serious butt at softball!

The PINK PANTHERS had a double header today against some of the better teams in the league.  They were undefeated until the first game today.  They played great, but were up against a team that was much bigger, older and more experienced.  This is a 6-under league, and all of the girls on the Hurricanes were on the older end of 6.  The Pink Panthers only have 3 girls that are even 6 already.  Never the less, they played well and hung in there for a close game, but also their first loss.  They won the second game and are now a very respectable 6-1, with 5 or 6 more games to go.

Naomi played really well.  She NEVER had to use the Tball tee, and got on base every single time and even though she got stranded on base several times, she did score a few runs too.   The video is a compilation of several clips of her at bats, fielding and a teammate’s cheer!

One of the BEST parts about living in Orlando!

We were getting the dinner dishes all cleaned up and heading the kids toward bed. It was that time of the day on Sunday where we all start to fade a bit from a long busy day. I just happened to turn on the TV and noticed that the local news was covering the space shuttle Discovery and it was about to launch. From our house on a clear day we can see the daytime launches pretty good, but this was a later “night time launch” (actually about dusk) so we hoped we would see it better. I grabbed my flip video and yelled for the kids and we watched it sail into space. THIS sight never gets old. I talk to people in my neighborhood that have watched launches from here since the early days of the space program, long before the shuttles and they all agree. It is always an amazing sight to see.

And sadly, besides trick or treating with the kids on Halloween, it is about the only time the neighborhood comes out and even speaks to each other. It is always short, but always a nice visit as we all stare straight into the sky watching a rocket full of very smart, very brave men and women blast into the sky to go make amazing things happen on their mission (and in the end likely make our lives better with what they learn).

This is a great part about living here. I will miss them when they are gone in a few years.

Naomi playing softball...

Here is a video of Naomi’s in her 2nd softball game with her team the Pink Panthers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nfg8Gov-sD8

In her league things are different. It was supposed to be a T-ball softball league, but apparently all the teams agreed to change it to coach pitch/Tball which is much more fun. The batter gets 4 pitches from the coach and if they do notget a hit in that 4 pitches, they get 2 chances off a Tee. Odd numbers but suffice to say, at this point in the season, most girls end up hitting offthe tee anyway.

Naomi joined the team late and missed all the preseason practices. Sheliterally started with the team on the opening day game. (and in that gamewent 1 for 1 with a single and run to her credit. She also fielded an out at third, so the coach has already zeroed in on her. She went to 1 practiceand then here we are at game 2. Again she was perfect 3 for 3 at bat (only having to use the tee at her first at bat) and the team is still undefeated.

In the video there is a long time between her first on base and the next batter’s hit. She was stranded on base after the second hit “because they had batted through the order” or “because they scored 4 runs” – not sure which, but it did not make any sense to me either way.

Then at the end of the game, the home team insisted on a hard stop at the endof the hour, even though they still had an at bat in our coaches mind AND they were losing by 4 runs... There coach was arguing the point so, as confused as she was, our coach excepted the victory and allowed them to call the game.

We won (12-4), so no one is worried about it, but I guess I need to learn the rules so I can keep up.

Apple just blows me away with how ahead of the game they are!! Look!

I am in the Delta terminal of the Orlando International Airport and as I turn the corner headed to my gate, I see this!

Yes. It is exactly what it looks like. Apple has created a vending machine that sells iPods, iPhones, iPod Touch and Apple accessories!

Absolutely brilliant! You can't see it, but on the ends have vibrant color ads (top to bottom) showing iPods in many colors, etc. So when you head down the walkway, in either direction, you see it for sure.

Too bad I already have an iPhone, cause buying one here sure seemed like a cool thing to do!!

Most amazing video I have seen in years!

This is a 7:30 minute video that they used to start the recent RADIO INK magazine, “CONVERENCE” conference.  This was a radio industry conference to start the industry talking about where we have come in the past 10 years and where we will be going in the next 10 years.  With a healthy, respectful look at the unbelievable way that technology and the world around us is changing, they want to start Radio statagizing on how to deal with it. (actually, Media is probably the better word than Radio going forward… as you will see in this fascinating video.

Pay close attention.  There are some facts and figures that go by quickly.  You may even want to just watch it 2 or 3 times like I did initially, so you will get it all, but one thing is for sure, no matter how “cutting edge” you think you are right now, in 8 minutes you will feel so far behind it will astound you.

The problem raising a child in a mixed family...

My wife and I are both from Alabama.  You may not know, but in Alabama there is a hard and fast societal rule (if not a law) that you must have a clear alliance for either the University of Alabama OR Auburn University.  People naively try and pretend they are for both teams, but that is impossible.  It is like someone trying to be both a Muslim AND a Christian; like Anakin Skywalker trying to be a Jedi AND on the Dark Side, or a politician trying to be both a Democrat AND a Republican.  It won't work.  You can't reconcile the two parts.  You will likely die trying.

Tina grew up in
Tuscaloosa and is a lifelong fan of the Crimson Tide.   I moved to Birmingham at the impressionable age of 9.  Just weeks after moving to town in 1975, I cheered my heart out for the Tigers to beat Alabama and have been an Auburn fan ever since.  We both LOVE good college football and would rather watch a good game (regardless of who is playing) that do just about anything else on those lovely Saturdays in the Fall.

It has been said, you can’t help who you fall in love with.  This is so true.  Well, with these required athletic associations throughout the state, it is inevitable that some mixing would happen over the years.  You may be aware of this, but my Tina and I are in one of these “mixed marriages”.   It is something we felt we could handle, and in the past 12½ years we have not once let it come between us.  We might disagree on our favorite team, but we have plenty of common enemies in teams Alabama and Auburn both hate to keep us united!   What we did not consider was how much it would effect our children.

Like that couple who marry with one being Christian and the other being Jewish, we idealistically thought it would work it self out when it came to out kids.  We said things like. “We will let them decide when they are old enough” even though we were dressing them in orange/blue or crimson/white baby clothes just days after we got them.  The we said things like “Eli can be for Auburn and Naomi can be for Alabama” which works great for Tina because Naomi is focused and determined to be just like her mother in every way, but Eli changes every time the wind blows.  One day Alabama, the next day Auburn. One day LSU, the next day Clemson (we do not know…). One day UCF, the next day back to Florida.

Well yesterday my son brought me a picture he made me to cheer me up after a long day at work.  (I love that he knows I needed cheering up!)  He is a politician.  He included all the things he thought I needed from him.  He drew a tiger.  He put the AU and AUBURN on it, even drawing himself (or is that me) cheering for Auburn!  He even through in Z88.3.com as an extra bonus, but then I looked at the top of the page to see that he wrote Nick Saban at the top of the page.  I know he knows that Nick is the coach for Alabama, but in his haste and excitement to draw me this picture he got lost in the details swirling around in his 6 year old head from both parents influence and there it was.  It was like a kick in the head.   We have been pushing him too hard.  A 6 year old does not need that kind of pressure, but we had put him in that AU/UA pressure cooker without even knowing what we had done.

So from now on there is a new rule.  Eli can be a fan of any team he wants.  He can choose.  No pressure at all.  It is all up to him… as long it is not Tennessee.  That is a deal breaker.  J

*I also included Naomi's picture from that same day... much less to worry about there. :)

I love the INSIDE THE ACTOR STUDIO's ending 10 Question quiz!

I love this.  If you you have not seen Inside the Actor’s Studio, you really owe it to yourself to set your DVR.   It is a fascinating take on the celebrity interview show.

Since its premiere (on the Bravo network), Inside the Actors Studio has had over 200 guests.  While most of the show is a one-on-one interview conducted by James Lipton, the interview always ends with Lipton submitting a questionnaire to the guest. The questionnaire consists of 10 questions and was orginated by French televison personality Bernard Pivot, after the ProustQuestionnaire.

The ten questions Lipton asks are:

  1. What is your favorite word?

  2. What is your least favorite word?

  3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

  4. What turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

  5. What sound or noise do you love?

  6. What sound or noise do you hate?

  7. What is your favorite curse word?

  8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

  9. What profession would you not like to do?

  10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

So what would your answers be?   J
